Does a platypus lay eggs4/20/2023 It is believed that mammals are derived from a group of reptiles known as the synapsids. Monotremes are also known for their ability to produce milk for their young. Platypus, along with the Echidnas are Monotremes, which are a group of highly specialized egg-laying mammals. Reptiles are usually covered with scales, not fur and reptiles, of course, are cold-blooded whereas the platypus is warm-blooded. With, a 2008 Gene map showed that the two are closely related.īut there are also some important differences between them as well. Platypuses also share a lot of similarities with the repitles. Mammals on the other hand have a separate duct for urine and feces, and sometimes another one for mating. Platypuses also use a single duct for urine, feces, and sexual mating. Similar to the reptiles, platypuses have their feet to the side, whereas mammals have theirs beneath them. One major difference lies in their body structure. So what are some of the differences that make our duck-billed friends so different from other mammals? Meg Jerrard Differences Between Platypus and Mammals? Other similarities include sweat glands, three middle ear lobes as well as the presence of the neocortex. Hair or fur is a uniquely mammalian feature, and so platypus having fur is also a reason to class them with mammals. Fish and reptiles have a scaly skin, Birds have thin skin, and mammals have fur(usually). It is also why many of the early scientists rejected claims that the Platypus could not lay eggs, since their new milk-feeding was so popular among mammals.Īnother important physical characteristic was that platypus have fur. From humans to zebras to bears, nourishing newborn offspring with milk is a defining characteristic among all mammals. The first and arguably most important similarity is that Platypus feeds milk to their young. The Platypus is one of the most bizarre mammal species in the world, but what are some of their similarities. ![]() Similarities Between Platypus and Mammals However, in 1884 the Scottish zoologist William Hay Caldwell set up an experiment by setting up a camp on the banks of the Burnett River in northern Queensland and along with the help of the local Aborigines began to search for platypus eggs.įinally, on the 2 September, Caldwell discovered the eggs, which took the scientific delegation by storm and finally solved the debate on whether or not Platypus lay eggs. Since the belief that all milk-producing animals gave birth to live young was so mainstream among scientists at the time, many refused to believe any claims that the platypus could lay eggs, even ignoring the aboriginal Australians who had observed the mammals for even longer than them. ![]() ![]() “ Of all the Mammalia yet known it seems the most extra-ordinary in its conformation exhibiting the perfect resemblance of the beak of a Duck engrafted on the head of a quadruped.“ George Shaw At first, however, he and many other scientists refused to believe the Platypus was actually real and at one point George Shaw was so dubious that he tried to cut the pelt with scissors to make sure the beak had not been stitched on by a taxidermist! George Shaw was the first zoologist to observe the Platypus and eventually grouped them with toothless mammals and sloths, in a group known as Bruta. He first described the animal as “an amphibious animal, of the moles’ species”. The platypus was first discovered by Europeans by a Navy captain named John Hunter in 1797, who observed one being hunted by an Aboriginal. The gestation period is only 10 to 14 days, and after the birth, the mother also spends time nursing the young until they are old enough to swim – which takes around 3 to 4 months.Ī Male Platypus does not partake in nursing it’s young and will usually avoid contact with the females until it is time to mate – which is between June and October and usually occurs in waters. The female platypuses will build birthing dens to store the eggs in and they spend most of their day protecting these eggs and keeping them warm by holding them between their body and their tail. Female Platypuses usually lay one to two eggs at a time.
